InternChina are proud to have partnered with Swinburne University of Technology to deliver an exciting Engineering internship, language and cultural group program in the beautiful city of Zhuhai in Guangdong Province, China.Destination:    Zhuhai, Guangdong, China

Dates:  23rd June – 4th August 2019

Format:    The first week will consist of Swinburne students taking part in a program of language classes, company visits, a calligraphy class and group dinners.  Following this, students will begin their 5-week internships in their full-time internships in various host companies.  Internships are Monday to Friday meaning students will have the opportunity to join InternChina’s optional evening and weekend activities.Language of Instruction: English

About the Program:
Students will reside in a private room in InternChina’s shared apartment accommodation which is typically based on two or three people sharing.  All apartments are furnished to a good standard with cooking equipment and utensils provided.  Students may reside with other participants from Swinburne or may be living with those from other universities taking part in other programs with InternChina as apartments are assigned to provide the most convenient commute to students’ host companies.

During the first week, students will undertake 15 hours of Mandarin Chinese language classes as well as two company visits, a calligraphy class and group dinners. The mandarin language classes aim to provide students with a good base understanding of the Chinese language and offer some useful words and phrases which will help with day to day life.  What students learn in these classes will hopefully provide the foundations for further, independent mandarin study following program completion.

Students will visit leading, international companies with a focus on engineering processes, product design, manufacturing, quality assurance and project management.  Companies will offer students an introductory presentation and the opportunity to witness operations first hand.

InternChina offers an active social program, with optional dinners every Thursday for all students on place and optional weekend activities and trips every week.  As part of the Swinburne Program, students will also have two exclusive dinners as a group included in the program fees to meet one another and try some delicious Chinese food together.

Students should begin the internship application process with InternChina before the end of March to ensure all host companies are finalised before arriving in China.  Students will begin their internship placements in the second week and be exposed to how engineering theory is put into practice by being integrated into the day to day tasks, challenges and objectives of the host company. Students will associate with leaders in their field and establish a network of useful China-based contacts. Students are expected to learn technical skills and develop a range of soft skills, all of which are highly sought after by employers.   All students will have an English-speaking supervisor but will be working with colleagues from China and most likely other countries too.

This program will act as an enabler for students to gain unparalleled insight into China, notably the world of manufacturing, product design, sourcing and procurement and the opportunities it presents. It will be a platform from which the students can forge new networks, acquire real hands-on experience and gain industry knowledge.

InternChina are proud to have partnered with  Western Sydney University and Curtin University to deliver an exciting 4-week heritage-focussed internship project, combined with an introduction to Chinese language & culture. The project is set amongst UNESCO Recognised Sites of historical importance in Kaiping in Guangdong province, China with Funding from Australia’s New Colombo Plan (NCP).

PROGRAM DETAILS

The Destination: Kaiping, Guangdong China

Dates: 23rd November – 22nd December 2019

Application Deadline: 30th June 2019

Duration: 4 weeks

Funding: Participants may be eligible to receive up to $3,000 AUD of travel grants

Format: 10 students will cooperate with Tangkou community staff, InternChina staff and each other in a 4-week experimental learning project in the Kaiping region of China. The project focuses on conservation, cultural exchange, language study with the goals being to raise awareness of the area to Australians and the continued preservation of Chinese-Australian history.
Students will develop their 4-week project area of focus for the internship in their chosen field and produce/maintain their Personal Development Plan (PDP) with InternChina staff prior to embarking on the Internship.

Language of Instruction: EnglishAbout the Program: Students from different backgrounds will cooperate with the intention of raising awareness of Kaiping’s historical significance to Australians. This unique, immersive experience will consist of language classes, seminars, one-to-one support and guided tours of the local villages/industries.

From the 1800’s, thousands of Chinese nationals from this region emigrated to New South Wales as part of the Gold Rush. Many aging ‘Diaolou’ (watchtowers) and villages, four of which were inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2007, were constructed using money earned in New South Wales and elsewhere. These historic villages represent the initial waves of Chinese émigré to Australia, to where many Australian born Chinese can trace their roots. Some buildings have been restored, yet others stand neglected despite being of great historical significance.
Students will stay in a modern, newly built (November 2017) high quality single-sex, 4 or 8-bed dorm with other interns taking part in this program. The project is located in the rural & historic southern Chinese town of Kaiping in Guangdong province, China. The area is a living museum, surrounded by rice paddies (many of which are still ploughed by oxen) and in a UNESCO-recognised area of historical significance. Facilities in the residence and will be clean, comfortable and modern. All meals will be provided, and students can assist with the cooking process with fresh, organic produce sourced locally as much as they wish.

Bicycles and helmets for exploring the local area will be provided for free. Whilst the setting is beautiful, we are expecting participants to make their own fun in their free time by arranging events (such as musical events), meeting locals, further practicing Chinese and sharing ideas (perhaps over a coffee or beer in the hostel). There are plenty of watchtowers to wander into and discover, some of which have graffiti from soldiers stationed there in World War Two. Students can also contribute to the cooking and daily requirements of supporting the Tangkou Community Project.

To complement the internship, students will receive:

  • Full orientation and presentation about Tangkou and the Community Project
  • Guided bicycle tours to four UNESCO World Heritage Sites with English speaking guide
  • Environmental /Green Farming workshop with lunch followed by fruit and vegetable picking
  • 3 Local industry visits such as the local chocolate factory, soy sauce factory and mushroom farm
