InternChina is excited to announce the launch of our 2019 Scholarship programmes, offering a variety of different opportunities and for applicants from around the world a chance to complete a paid placement in the amazing city of Taipei, for FREE!

InternChina’s scholarship programme is a groundbreaking opportunity which enables students to complete a work placement in China for the first time, worth £1,495!

Alongside the minimum working hours required to accredit the internship, InternChina works with you, your host company and your university to ensure the internships fulfil academic requirements and workplace health and safety standards.

If you’re a recent graduate, what better way could there be to kick-start your career with a 6-12 month role in Asia?!

The internships are paid at or above Taiwanese minimum wage and you will receive unrivalled pre-departure and on-place support from InternChina’s experienced team throughout your time in Taipei!

PROGRAMME TIMELINE

With there being a variety of scholarships to apply for, there will be different application closing dates. See below for the eligibility criteria and applications end date information.

  • Placements start and finish any time of the year, but you must start your role in 2019, commit to at least 6 months and you’re only able to stay in Taiwan for a maximum of 12 months.
  • Salary during internship in Taipei depends on the amount negotiated with the host company, national minimum wage is approx £3.50 per hour/£500 per month.
  • Any successful applicants will be required to provide a deposit of £200 to our UK account that will be paid back on completion of your agreed placement.

Manchester Scholarship

The Programme

Each year we give away 1 free programme in Taipei, for those looking to complete a 6-12 month paid placement.

This opportunity is open to all students currently studying at a Manchester university, and those who have graduated in the past 12 months. You can find more details on this opportunity here.

Why does this scholarship exist?

We wanted to offer students and recent graduates from our home city of Manchester the opportunity to gain paid work experience in Asia.

Eligibility Criteria

  • To be studying or a recent graduate from either Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Manchester, or the University of Salford.
  • Achieved at least a 2:1 in your undergraduate or postgraduate course. If you’ve not completed your course yet, the grades you’ve already achieved must average at a minimum of 60%.
  • Hold a UK passport and not over the age of 30 years old (Due to Taiwan visa regulations).

Accommodation

Accommodation is not provided as part of our Taipei Programme, however our team in Taipei will support you in sourcing appropriate accommodation, the cost of which will be covered by the salary from your host company.

Programme Cost

Sheffield Scholarship

The Programme

Each year we give away 1 free programme in Taipei, for those looking to complete a 6-12 month paid placement.

The opportunity is open to all students currently studying at a Sheffield university, and those who have graduated in the past 12 months. You can find more details on this opportunity here.

Why does this scholarship exist?

We wanted to offer students and recent graduates from one of our favourite cities in the UK, Sheffield, the opportunity to gain paid work experience in Asia.

Eligibility Criteria

  • To be studying or a recent graduate from either University of Sheffield or Sheffield Hallam University.
  • Achieved at least a 2:1 in your undergraduate or postgraduate course. If you’ve not completed your course yet, the grades you’ve already achieved must average at a minimum of 60%.
  • Hold a UK passport and not over the age of 30 years old (Due to Taiwan visa regulations).

Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Students

The Programme

In 2019, we will be offering 1 scholarship place to UK students or recent graduates from a BAME background for those looking to complete a 6-12 month paid placement in Taipei.

Why does this scholarship exist?

1 in 8 employees in the UK are from a BAME background, yet only 1 in 16 of the FTSE 100 board members are from BAME groups, and only 1 in 15 people from an ethnic minority background are in a management position.  (Source)

With 12% of the UK working population coming from a BAME background, we wanted to offer students and recent graduates the opportunity to gain international work experience in Asia, and improve their employability here in the UK, or abroad.

Eligibility Criteria

  • To be a full time student or recent graduate from a UK university.
  • Achieved at least a 2:1 in your undergraduate or postgraduate course. If you’ve not completed your course yet, the grades you’ve already achieved must average at a minimum of 60%.
  • Have a Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) background.
  • Hold a UK passport and not be over the age of 30 years old (Due to Taiwan visa regulations).

Women in STEM

The Programme

 In 2019, we will be offering 1 scholarship place to UK students or recent graduates, identifying as women, with aspirations of working in a STEM field and those looking to complete a 6-12 month paid placement.

Why does this scholarship exist?

In the UK, 25% of UK STEM graduates are women, and as of 2017, the percentage of core STEM professions represented by women was only 23%. (Source) With demand for professionals in the STEM industry rising steadily, we wanted to offer women currently studying, or recently graduated, the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in Asia.

Taipei has a strong desire to encourage women to pursue a STEM career, and so the opportunity to gain work experience here will be hugely beneficial to your employability here in the UK, or further afield.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Identify as a woman with aspirations to work in a STEM field.
  • Achieved at least a 2:1 in your undergraduate or postgraduate course. If you’ve not completed your course yet, the grades you’ve already achieved must average at a minimum of 60%.

We understand that it can be frustrating if you just miss out on the opportunities offered through funded programmes or bursaries due to your student finance entitlement, so we wanted to offer a non-means tested scholarship to UK students and graduates who might not otherwise have the opportunity to gain work experience in Asia.

Chinese Studies Background

The Programme

In 2019, we will be offering 1 scholarship place to UK students or recent graduates studying a degree with a focus on China and for those looking to complete a 6-12 month paid placement in Taiwan.

Why does this scholarship exist?

Over 30 UK universities offer the opportunity to learn Chinese, either as the main focus of your degree or as a minor subject. When you also consider the courses with a focus on international business, the history of China, or even those with one module mentioning China’s growing influence, there are huge numbers of students thinking about this part of the world. This is why we wanted to offer UK students and recent graduates the opportunity to put their skills to use and gain valuable work experience in Asia.

Eligibility Criteria

  • To be a full time student or recent graduate from a UK university, with a degree background in Chinese, Chinese Studies or similar.
  • Speak HSK 4/ TOCFL 2 Mandarin Chinese.
  • Achieved at least a 2:1 in your undergraduate or postgraduate course. If you’ve not completed your course yet, the grades you’ve already achieved must average at a minimum of 60%.
  • Hold a UK passport and not be over the age of 30 years old (Due to Taiwan visa regulations).

We’re offering an amazing 10 places for Canadian students looking to complete their co-op placement abroad in Taipei.

Māori Scholarship

The Programme

InternChina are offering to waiver the programme fee, worth $2,795.00 NZD, for one lucky applicant to complete a paid, 12-week internship with support from our Taipei Branch.  Many varying host company options are available which can be discussed with our team following a successful application.

Extra – Curricular Activities

Participants will receive an entry-level salary from their host company to help cover in-country costs such as rent and food. The salary will be negotiable between the successful applicant and their host company.

Taipei is rich in leisure and recreation, cultural arts, heritage sites, and other attractions, it enjoys a superb geographical position and world-renowned transportation networks and a comfortable climate all year round.

Participants can opt to join the weekly Thursday dinner organised by Taipei Branch Staff and join weekend trips, activities and events so will never be stuck for things to outside of the internship.

Eligibility

  • Participant must be of Māori  Heritage
  • Participant must provide a motivation statement of no more than 300 words (see ‘How to Apply’)

Accommodation

Not included in this programme. However, our staff will support the successful applicant in sourcing appropriate accommodation, the cost of which will be covered by the salary from the host company.

Is there a programme fee?

Normally yes, but we’re offering the scholarship to cover the £1,495 programme fee! The scholarship includes comprehensive support from InternChina throughout the placement, the visa processing fees, travel & health insurance plus much more!

What nationalities are eligible to apply?

Sadly not everyone is eligible for the appropriate visa for Taiwan. Only passport holders from the countries listed below are able to be considered for the scholarship opportunities.

What's the application process?

  1. Complete the application form below.
  2. InternChina will review your application, request CV and invite you for a 30 minute telephone interview.
  3. InternChina will then review all applications and award the funding shortly after the application end dates to those who score highest on throughout the process.
  4. If selected, InternChina will require the applicant to provide the refundable programme deposit and start working on finalising the internship position.
  5. InternChina will provide the detailed visa instructions and those who are selected can book flights and look forward to an amazing experience in Taipei!

When is the application deadline?

Again, as we’re providing a wide variety of scholarships for potential applicants all over the world, there’s different application windows for the scholarships on offer and these can be found in the above section of the page.

What's not included in the scholarship?

  • The cost of travelling to and from Taiwan.
  • Accommodation, food, drink and other general expenses while in Taipei.
  • The cost of any vaccinations, based on the applicant’s medical history and their doctor’s recommendations.
  • The cost of any optional InternChina trips the successful applicants decide to take part in.
  • The cost of the recommend and provided phone plan by InternChina, after the first month.

Are the placements paid?

Yes. As with all InternChina programmes, you will know exactly how much you will be paid, interview with the placement company and confirm your placement well before setting off for your epic adventure! The salary for Taipei placements will easily cover living expenses (rent, food etc).

Which sectors are available?

There’s a wide variety of companies, positions and sectors available. Many of our companies also do not require you to study a certain course to consider you for their position. You can look through a full listing of the positions here.

Do I need to speak Chinese to participate?

No, although it will help for everyday life! Most of our partner companies don’t require any Chinese language skills. If you do happen to speak Mandarin, or can read/write traditional characters then this will open up more possibilities when it comes to finding you a position.

As you will be living in Taipei for a while, we do encourage you to do some self learning of the basics though to help you settle in. InternChina also offer language lessons at an affordable but additional cost, if you’re looking to become a Mandarin master!

How many hours will I be on placement?

Our Taipei placements are full time, meaning you will work roughly 40-45 hours per week, Monday to Friday with no weekend work required.

What's the cost of living like in Taiwan?

With the salary you earn from your internship host company, you shouldn’t have any worries about being able to pay rent/eat and enjoy your time in Taipei! We’ve created an extensive budgeting guide that clarifies what you’re likely to be spending on a monthly basis throughout your time on the program here.

Which visa will I have?

For the Taipei program you will be issued a working holiday visa. InternChina will help you register with the labour bureau once in Taipei also. All visa application fees are included in the program fee and InternChina will guide you through the visa application process from start to finish.

What about accommodation?

Accommodation is not included in the scholarship at any time throughout your time on the programme.

Our friendly Taipei team will help you when you first arrive to finalise your accommodation as quickly as possible. Any documentation needed to be signed, advice on locations and negotiations can all be assisted by our staff over in Taipei.

You’ll also be provided some helpful advice on what hotels or Air BnB locations to book for those first few days while you get everything sorted.

Before you jet off for Taiwan, the team will give you some advice about the city, best places to live depending on your preferences.

You will also be introduced to the other participants who will be arriving at a similar time before you arrive so you can connect and discuss potentially living together.
