On a Sunday, two days after my arrival in Zhuhai, I joined a day trip organized by one of the other IC office interns. I was told it was going to be a one hour bus drive and a one hour hike until we would reach a waterfall where we could go for a swim. By that time I did not know how amazing this trip was going to be.
At 10:00 in the morning we got on the bus to a town called 金星村, which is close to a mountain called 黄茅田 (or here the Google maps address: Sheng Dao, Taishan Shi, Jiangmen Shi, Guangdong Sheng).
We were a group of twenty enthusiastic interns who could not wait to see this supposedly beautiful waterfall. So we got off the bus, put sunscreen on, and started hiking.
After five to ten minutes of walking, the hiking track became quite adventurous. We strode through little streams, jumped from one stone to another, walked through bushes and had to be careful while walking along some pretty steep hillsides… oh and not to forget about all the Chinese paparazzi who came along and wanted to take selfies with us!
It was very hot and humid that day. Accordingly, we were melting in the sun until we finally reached the swimming hole. Within seconds, all of us jumped into the water to cool off. At last we then knew that the hike was totally worth it. The view from the top was stunning and we stayed for the whole afternoon.
And after that… well… we had to go all the way back to the town where the bus had been waiting for us. It turned out the way down was even more challenging than the way up. We had such a good time and it was a great opportunity for me to get to know the interns in Zhuhai. Even though I still had a jetlag, I’m very glad I joined the group that day..
If you also want to experience the real China and get working experience, apply now!
Zhuhai has been voted the most livable and romantic city in China. Therefore, I would advise anyone who has never been to China, to make Zhuhai a must see destination! InternChina is always planning different activities and trips for all of the current interns. Let me give you a little bit of an insight of the trips I have been planning over this summer.
- Waterfall trip
The Waterfall Trip was organized by a friend of mine. I helped him organize it by bringing many interns on the trip. The waterfall was about an hour from Zhuhai. Once we arrived there, we had to hike for another hour to get to the waterfall. The water was splendid, the waterfall was beautiful. We were surrounded by nature with no one else but our big group. I would definitely recommend anyone coming to Zhuhai, to go to this waterfall.
- Taekwondo class
We had the incredible chance to participate in a Taekwondo class with the help of Henry, our customer relations staff. Many interns had never tried this sport discipline. I, myself was pretty impressed on how difficult the moves can be. Some interns were so interesting in it that they signed up to go to the classes twice a week. Come to Zhuhai, you’ll get to train with black belts and learn how to do some wonderful kicks!
- Movie night
Many of the interns had wanted to see a movie. Of course when Jurassic World came out, we jumped on the occasion to go watch it. We booked the tickets online and got our 3D glasses. The movie was spectacular, we only payed 49 RMB + 10 RMB glasses and it was totally worth it. The movie theatres in China are spectacular (well almost spectacular)! The seats can fall backwards laying almost all the way down. The downside of Chinese movie theatres is the people talking on their phones but if you pick the right seats, you should not hear them too much!
- Zhuhai International Circuit
All of the interns had the chance to go to the Pan Delta Super Race Festival. The festival took place at the Zhuhai International Circuit and was held from the 19th of June to the 21st of June. Zhuhai often hosts race festivals which is always interesting for the interns to see. If the interns want, there is also a go kart track available next to the circuit.
- Island trip
With the help of an agency, we were able to spend a lovely weekend on Dong’ao Island. The island was splendid, surrounded by nature and clear, clean water. We all spent a wonderful Saturday afternoon at the beach before sleeping in tents by the ocean. Zhuhai has hundreds of different islands to be discovered. Come to Zhuhai to explore these fantastic treasured islands!
- Chinese Corner
Many of the interns in Zhuhai do not speak Chinese. In fact most of the interns come to China with no Chinese language skills. Chinese Corner is a FREE class that is taught by kind Chinese ladies. The class can be joined by any foreigners and is always welcoming newbies. Recently we went on a field trip to the supermarket to apply what we had learned the week before about fruits and vegetables.
Thought these activities were fun? InternChina offers more than an internship! Hop on a plane and get to China, we are looking forward to meeting you!
IC Zhuhai Trip to Yangshuo
Our faces were all a little gloomy when we saw the weather forecast for the weekend; the weather app told us that we would be spending our whole trip in the rain. Well, the weather app was a liar and we had awesome sunshine throughout our whole trip!
We started our journey on a beautiful Friday morning from the new Yuan Ming Palace in Zhuhai. Early in the morning everyone was still a little sleepy but already very excited about our next adventure. We shared our bus with a Chinese tourist group and a crazy Chinese tour guide, whose name I am still unable to pronounce. Most of us took the chance to sleep in the bus, while the rest were enjoying the stunning landscape of Southern China.
In the afternoon we arrived at the Li River, the famous Symbol on the 20RMB bank note. We then embarked on motorized bamboo rafts and headed into one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen in my life.
After we spent some hours at arguably the most memorable and beautiful scenic spots of the whole of China, we drove off to Yangshuo city to check in to our hotel. The Hotel was small, clean and very modern so we quickly headedout to an awesome dinner with our Chinese tourist friends. In the restaurant we ate the famous local “Beer Fish” specialty. Having finished the Beer Fish, the night slowly went into some more beers and some more Baijiu and we headed off to the awesome Yangshuo nightlife. You can’t believe the pure masses of people being in such a small city and the lively and happy atmosphere everywhere around you.
After dipping into various areas, we settled in an internatinoal rock climbing bar, where the office manager of IC Zhuhai Paul Bailey offered to play some songs , assisted by his fellow singing interns. (Internal footage of that awesome singing on request…)
The next day we headed to the Yu Long River and had a very romantic tour on a small bamboo raft. “Romantic” would not be sufficient to describe the scenery and atmosphere of this place. As we arrived, we headed to a beautiful park which was the setting for one of the most romantic Chinese movies, “Sister Liu”. Having had an awesome local dinner after that, we visited the famous Silver Cave, one of the biggest and most beautiful caves in China and perhaps the whole world.
We were starting to get a little tired, but we still continued to enjoy the exciting and beautiful nightlife of Yangshuo for a second time and there surely will still be some stories told in a few years about this great trip. The way home on the next day was somewhat a quiet affair after one hell of a great night.
Don’t forget to watch our awesome movies for this and our other adventures. Join InternChina Zhuhai and be a part of the next adventure yourself!
There are a lot of beautiful places in Zhuhai but there is nothing more relaxing than taking a stroll down Jida Beach at night. The beach has recently been modernized and is now full of boardwalks with beautiful LED lighting. Right next to the beach, there are brand new, cozy little bars and cafes.
The romantic and leisurely atmosphere you get while walking down the mildly illuminated path gives you an awesome holiday feeling. There is some romantic music playing in the background and the night breeze from the sea is the right combination to give you an unforgettable memory of your time in romantic Zhuhai.
Our Managing Director Jamie Bettles recently returned to Zhuhai and commented on the development of Jida Beach. Make sure to check out this video.
In the evening there is also a brand new, colorful lightshow, with little fountains moving with to the music. A lot of couples will take a walk here which contributes to the relaxed feeling. Children will play in the water fountains and tourists take pictures of the scene.
It doesn’t matter if you want to drink a beer, a fancy cocktail or just have a nice cup of coffee. These little bars and cafes will give you the relaxed feeling of being on a honeymoon in the Caribbean. The atmosphere is peaceful and and the staff are very friendly and speak good English.
If you are currently in Zhuhai, I highly suggest that you take a walk in this beautiful seaside area and enjoy the unique atmosphere. If you are not in Zhuhai, come and join us and have one of the greatest times of your life.
As we already mentioned in a post from last week, Wechat is becoming a great platform for online payment. But unfortunately there are always uncertainties about online shopping for foreigners in China. Chinese customers use Taobao and Wechat payments, but for the creation of the bank account they provide their own Chinese ID. That becomes an issue for foreigners that plan to stay longer in China, and blocks them from all the benefits of cheap online shopping.
We can inform you that there is a way around this. For WeChat payment a foreigner can create account in some banks and enjoy the freedom that this creates. Not all banks allow people from abroad to sign-up for WeChat payment. Some of them require a Chinese ID and the process gets you stuck. Here are a few options that will allow this procedure:
Chinese Merchants Bank – for both debit and credit cards
Agricultural Bank of China – credit cards only
These are the banks that we know of so far. We are certain that in the future this operation will increase as China becomes more open towards the foreign markets and many foreigners come to live here.
As mentioned in our earlier article, a person can add his credit or debit cards through the “Wallet” menu in WeChat. Simply press the “Add Card” option and follow the procedure.
The next menu will just ask for your card details and then if needed it will require the Chinese ID. But for the banks that we suggested there won’t be a requirement for Chinese ID.
WeChat offers a lot of extremely convenient functions which benefit everyone. After the credit/debit card is set up, a person can get access to each of these features:
- Mobile Top Up – top up your credit for the phone. Very convenient and easy.
- Wealth – Track your spending and savings in the account.
- Lottery – who feels like some gabling? It’s on the tip of your fingers.
- Order Taxi – Easy way to get a taxi if you are in a big city.
- Specials – Online shopping mall for any kind of products.
- QQ Coins – buy currency for your QQ account with an ease.
- Lucky Money – Send and receive money from friends or contacts.
- Group Buying – special offers for meals in restaurants. Reduced prices and promotions.
- Credit Card – send money to another card or account.
- Tencent Charity – Donate money for charity.
- Movie Tickets – Buy tickets for the cinema.
- Go Dutch – find a dining place, choose how much you would like to pay and meet new people on that table using the same program.
- Air Ticket – Buy plane tickets.
All these awesome features are easier and easier to access. Tencent is creating a dominant platform for online shopping and is challenging Alibaba on its own territory. But this struggle between giants benefits only us the simple customers, because we receive more special offers and reduced prices. Hopefully this article was helpful for every foreigner that plans to stay for a longer period of time in China.

The scale of the developments in the Pearl River Delta represents some of the strongest in the whole of China. Its geographic location makes it perfect for opening up to foreign markets and it is already attracting a great deal of international companies. One of the key projects that have been in development for 10 years and are about to be finished is on the doorsteps of Zhuhai – Hengqin Island.

The near future looks incredible for Zhuhai and its surrounding areas! Take a look at more articles in our Blog section!
Yesterday, Sunday the 14th of November 2014 the annual Zhuhai – Macau charity “half-marathon” in Zhuhai took place. Kevin from our InternChina office in Zhuhai and Jesus who is currently interning at our partner company China 2 West were participating in this 16 km distance run.
Both were preparing for almost three weeks in order to finish the race in their best possible times and it needs to be said that they never ran such a long distance at a competition before. And indeed, Kevin and Jesus ran a great time considering this limited time to prepare. Both guys accomplished the 16 km distance within 1 hour and 20 minutes and feel happy to have crossed the finish line along with 500 other Chinese runners.
But not only was the run was a great experience for both, they also had a great time meeting, chatting and taking photos with lots of Chinese people. Finally all the runners had a big, delicious lunch in the Nanping area of Zhuhai which included free Harbin beer, what more would our two guys needed after a challenging race?
Also a big thank you to Maddy, Dasha, Manish, Pat and Sunny for supporting Kevin and Jesus on the morning before the run and giving our guys even more confidence and encouragement.

The Free Trade Zone in Zhuhai is expanding every year. Established in 1996, the FTZ is one of the 13 active zones in China and the only one in the west bank of the country. It is becoming one of first class FTZ in the world by 2020.
It is estimated to have yielded 1.69 billion Yuan ($270 million) in GDP and 1.3 billion Yuan ($208 million) in value added output of industrial business above expected size in the first half of this year. The year-to- year rise is between 10% and 12% annually.
Recently after a reform in its management methods of settlement of foreign exchange capital investments, the FTW offers even friendlier environment for foreigners willing to invest. The new rules make sure that there is minimum loss when transferring foreign exchange capital. This system protects each investor from fluctuating exchange rates.
The zone is to become a comprehensive bonded new town combining an international trade exhibition platform, regional logistics hub, bonded processing base and bonded commercial housing base. The beginning has started with the 20 level Chiao Kuang Business Center in Zhuhai-Macao Cross-Border.
Live Science Park to be created by Singapore in Zhuhai’s Free trade zone Doumen district.
A Singapore-headquartered fund management company will build a Singapore Life Science Park in the zone costing 12 billion to 15 billion Yuan ($1.92 billion to $2.4 billion) to cover a headquarters economy, medical treatment and health rehabilitation, medical R&D centre and other industries. The ground of the project will combine bio-pharmaceuticals, medical apparatus, massive health industry, medicine logistics and e-commerce in its territory.
AVIC International Holdings LTD will make the zone’s biggest aviation parts exchange centre in China. But this is not the only project in the city. Statistics show that the number of high-end projects since last year reached 179. These include a couple of Fortune Global 500 Companies and Top 500 Companies from China. The total investment exceeds 30 billion Yuan ($5 billion).
The expansion of the FTZ will include leading enterprises from the aerial maintenance and training sector, precision machining, electronic parts manufacturing, medicine and medical apparatus, warehousing and logistics.
The Zhuhai-Hong-Kong-Macao bridge is almost done. It should be oppened by 2016.
Once the Zhuhai-Hong Kong-Macao Bridge is finished it will create a historic trade bond in the delta. The FTZ will become a Macao-facing logistic delivery centre taking advantage of its preferential policies – “free trade zone”, “24/7 customs clearance dedicated checkpoint” and “special export tax reduction policy”.
By 2020 Zhuhai will have one of the greatest environments in the world for investment. The bridge with Hong Kong will make sure that it takes no more than 30-40 minutes drive to one of the most important financial centers in the world. The special rules in the Free Trade Zone will encourage many of the biggest companies in the world to invest and create their centers of operation in this place. And this is just the beginning. With growth that keeps pushing higher than 10 % each year, Zhuhai will become one of the most important points in China’s future economic development.
