Tai Chi in Zhuhai

We had an amazing InternChina activity last weekend! InternChina organized a private Tai Chi teacher. We met him on a Sunday afternoon in a nice park here In Zhuhai for two hours. Unfortunately the teacher didn’t speak any English, but Morgan was able to translate everything for us. As none of us really had any idea what Tai Chi was all about, he started the class with an introduction for us.

Tai Chi (Chinese: 太极, Taiji) is an art of self-defense and is very popular in China. Every morning, you can see Chinese people practicing Tai Chi on the streets and in the parks here. Kids get taught Tai Chi at school at a young age, and even in Western countries you can find a lot of schools for Tai Chi.

 basic positions in Tai Chi
InternChina – This is one of the basic positions in Tai Chi

Tai Chi is not purely applicable to self-defense, it is also good for maintaining your health. The Yin (negative, feminine, dark, formless, attracting) and Yang (positive, masculine, bright, substantial, repulsing) is the basis of Tai Chi. These two elements are opposites of each other and Tai Chi teaches to unify these two elements to ensure inner balance.

Trying to achieve inner balance :)
InternChina – Trying to achieve inner balance 🙂

After the introduction we started practising. The characteristics of Tai Chi are slow movements and the teacher showed us how to do it first and then we had to copy him. At first we thought “Oh that’s easy, we just have to copy the teacher!” No, it was not easy at all. Luckily, we were a small group of 8 people so the teacher had a good eye on each of us to correct our positions and movements.

tai chi lesson in zhuhai
InternChina – It’s all about balance!

There are a lot of mistakes you can make when practicing Tai Chi. For example: Stance – Try to ensure your feet are shoulder-distance apart, narrow stances mean you have to compensate in other areas to maintain good balance; Over-reaching – Try to resist the temptation to push out with your arms and upper body, consider moving in from the lower body rather than stretching out from the upper body; Posture – Think about keeping a straight line along the spine and these are just a few.

After those 2 hours of practising Tai Chi we were all done for  the day, and went to bed early. It seems to be an easy sport but when you do it in the right way, it is quite exhausting. It is impressive to see so many people practising Tai Chi every day in the early morning. Now we know, why the old Chinese people, who do Tai Chi on a daily basis are still active and can move like young people.

If you want to learn Tai Chi then apply now and come to Zhuhai!

Halloween in China

InternChina – Happy Halloween

Historically, Halloween is an American tradition, however it has now spread all over the world. People everywhere are dressed up as scary monsters and bloody bodies. Of course the amount of people that dress up depends on the country they live in. Here in China they don’t have a national holiday for Halloween, so when people celebrate it, they do so on the weekend and usually near places where a lot of westerners are.

In Zhuhai you could only find two places where they celebrated Halloween. One was a western bar, called London Lounge and the other was at the bar street here in Zhuhai. Nearly all InternChina Interns went to the London Lounge. Arriving at the London Lounge, a lot of people were dressed up – but mostly western people. Afterwards we headed to the second Halloween location – the bar street. All trees in the Street were full of bright pumpkins. Walking down the street of clubs, some of the Chinese people were surprised by our look. Two night clubs were decked out in scary decorations.

Some international schools in Zhuhai had Halloween parties as well, but just during the day and with a lot of small children. Not scary enough for real Halloween experts.

Preparation for Halloween wasn’t that easy in Zhuhai. The underground market seemed to have ignored Halloween and offered the same stuff as usual. Only in the western supermarket Carrefour, there was a small section of Halloween costumes and decorations. If you are well prepared – so think about what you want to wear well in advance – you could order some costumes on the internet. However face paint could be found everywhere and, together with a lot of creativity, we made up our own last-minute-Halloween costumes. The ghost was pretty much the easiest 🙂

At least we had a lot of fun, celebrating Halloween here in Zhuhai.

If you want to celebrate Halloween together with other international interns in China apply now.

2nd Village: three students lived in this house with their mother (the father ran away several years ago). The two brothers are sick with haemophilia(血友病) and need weekly medication. They were not in school that day due to having a fever. The mother was very kind and hospitable. We chatted and introduced to the children where were from. It was the first time they had met foreigners, not counting 5 nationalities! They were quite shy but very nice. The CPAZ volunteers decided to give a on the spot additional donation for this family, which led to emotions swelling high, and tears on both sides.

Come Together 2014 is currently in the process of being organized so that we can effectively lobby and secure bigger donations for next year’s event. But WE NEED YOUR HELP! How? Easy:

1)      Donations pledged to the Charity

2)      Prizes for the lucky draws

3)      Cash Sponsorships to cover the costs of the event (even though the actual costs are pretty low, it would be great if all could be covered so that all the profit from the drinks could directly go to the charity fund)

4)      Alcohol Sponsorships (to be sold during venue-to raise funds)

5)      Band to perform!

6)      Volunteers to help with the above and with the event itself.

Food Shopping in Zhuhai

Last time I told you a lot of things about the girlie-clothes-shopping side here in Zhuhai. Now it is time for the question “Where can I find fresh food to cook on my own?” There are several places to find food in Zhuhai. Where to go depends on what you want.
If you want to buy fresh meat and some vegetables you have to go to one of the “wet markets” here in Zhuhai, for example in the district of Gongbei. But I need to tell you one thing; these “wet markets” are different to what you have seen in Europe or in the US. Mostly the “wet market” is in one big building with a minimum of two crowded floors. One stand is next to the other but it’s sorted by sections of meat, vegetables and seafood.

You will find all sorts of seasonal and regional vegetables there and the price is quite cheap in comparison to our prices back in Europe. In the meat section you need to have a strong stomach. Nearly every kind meat could be found there, from duck and chicken up to sheep and beef.

This is the place where it starts to smell really strong, and along with the view, it’s kind of hard for me NOT to escape to the fresh air. I think seeing these pictures gives you a small idea of what you can find there. However, this is fresh meat which, if well cooked, tastes really good.

In those “wet markets” you also can buy fresh fish, but I would recommend buying fish at the fresh fish market in Xiangzhou near the port of the fishermen called Xiangzhou Yugang. Every morning the freshly caught fish is brought there. It is also a nice sightseeing part of Zhuhai. If you don’t like the typical markets here in Zhuhai, we also have the normal Western supermarkets.

fresh seafood

Maybe you know “Carrefour” and “Wal-Mart” – those two supermarkets are representing the western food stores in Zhuhai. In those shops you can nearly find everything you need for the household: from food, beverages up to kitchen utensils and clothes. They also have an “imported goods” section – this is like paradise for us interns. Sometimes you can find goods from Germany like “Rittersport” chocolate, or from Italy, like pizza and pasta, and a lot more lovely things. So don’t be afraid of missing the homemade food – you can cook it yourself with all the goods from the western supermarkets.

Roller-Skate Party in Zhuhai

This week we had an InternChina event! We decided to have a Roller-Skate Party and we found a place in Zhuhai where you can roller skate until 2 am for just 8 RMB (not even 1 euro)! We met a 7.30pm to have a nice dinner together with the interns and then proceeded to the roller skate place, which was like an outdoor disco with music and disco lights. It was like back in the 80ies!!!

roller skating in zhuhai
roller skating in zhuhai

The skates were included in the price and you could even choose between roller skates and inline skates. Of course I chose the roller skates, otherwise I wouldn´t feel like partying in the 80s.  After not having stood on skates for about 8 years now, you can imagine how scared and how wobbly on my legs I was. Thankfully at least half the group felt the same way. The rest were pros though.

So in the beginning, the professionals were holding hands with the beginners. The Chinese people were so nice and they were all trying to help us. We were really thankful and I was so lucky that I didn´t fall. Of course Morgan had to try some new stuff like skating down a pipe and she fell twice! There were no injuries but it was quite funny.

morgan skating

Everybody had a lot of fun last night. We were watching each other fall, some of the interns had good moves on their skates and of course we were dancing on skates because it was a roller-skate disco. My dancing, however, mainly consisted of holding the rail with one hand and waving the other hand to keep my balance.
Everyone enjoyed the party thoroughly and the interns suggested to make it a weekly activity!

Qingdao Sailing Week

This week the International Sailing Federation ISAF world cup takes place in Qingdao.
From the 14th to the 19th of October 2013, Qingdao is not only host to a variety of different Sailing boats decorating the horizon but also to 131 sailors from 24 nations, including sailing world champions from all over the world.

The ISAF sailing world cup is said to be “the definitive guide to the best-of-the-best in the Olympic sailing world”. Starting in China before moving to Australia, the USA and finishing in Europe over 2000 sailors from 75 countries compete in it.

sailing in qingdao

Right in time for the opening event, a shift in the wind brought a strong northerly breeze that took “the world’s finest Olympic sailing talents” close to their limits.
Wind speeds in between 20-23 knots (around 40 km/h) and gusts up to 30 knots (55 km/h) made the first races exciting to watch.

The schedule of the Sailing Week includes two days Qualification Series, three days Final Series with the concluding final day Medal Race.

Since Qingdao was host of the Olympic and Paralympic sailing regattas in 2008 an area of 450.000 square meters has been reconstructed with lots of new buildings, the port and regatta fields making Qingdao the perfect scene for the ISAF Sailing world cup.

qingdao kiting
qingdao kiting

With the strong breeze and sudden gusts the weather makes the races lots of fun to watch even though I have no clue about regattas, the rules or basically sailing at all.

And I am not the only one who thinks that Qingdao and its beautiful coastal area is the perfect scene for a Sailing World Cup.

“Qingdao is a wonderful city with a magnificent sailing culture. Every time I come to China I am overwhelmed by the Chinese hospitality with such friendliness. Qingdao has fantastic spirit, keep doing what you’re doing and ISAF looks forward to continuing our wonderful relationship for many years.”
– Carlo Croce – ISAF President.
